Linda R. Tepper and Steve M. Abrams started The Ruby Slippers, an antique shop in Manhattan, in the 70's. Fascinated by the representative models "ARNEL" and "FDR" of Tart Optical that were handled in dead stock, they asked Tart Optical to manufacture them. The enthusiasm was transmitted and Shady Character was born.
